North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (N.C. A&T) proposes to serve as the 2022-2024 Bridge to Doctorate (BD) project institutional site for the North Carolina Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (NCLSAMP) program. N.C. A&T is the largest Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in the country and is the #1 Public HBCU per US News and World Report. Long known for its excellence in STEM undergraduate education, N.C. A&T has in recent years substantially expanded and invested in its STEM graduate degree programs, and wraparound student supports aimed at Future Minority Ph.D. Researcher (PFMPR) Bridge to Doctorate (BD) program (PMFPR). Building on lessons learned from prior LSAMP cohort experiences and the literature on fostering researcher identity, the PFMPR will integrate culturally reflective mentoring and holistic STEM professional development, including intensive training around fellowship applications, for Black, Latinx, and Native American Ph.D. students. Three core objectives are: (1) Enroll a cohort of 12 verified LSAMP scholars into STEM graduate degree programs at N.C. A&T; (2) Implement a comprehensive program that successfully prepares, retains, and enables BD Fellows to undertake STEM doctoral programs; and (3) Provide support to BD Fellows beyond BD funding in preparation for graduation and career. We expect this project, which incorporates proven and innovative professional development strategies, will become a sustainable model that other MSIs and traditionally majority institutions can use to support their Ph.D. students from underrepresented backgrounds, particularly their doctorate students of color.
